Smart Mowing: Mowing your lawn at a high setting is good for the grass for number of reasons, including weed control. If the grass is taller than the weeds and their seeds, it shades them from getting sunlight, working in the same way mulch does.

GardenListings.com - Weed Control
Proper cultivation methods and the use of techniques such as permaculture can restrict the growth of weeds in the garden as more desired plant species effectively crowd out those considered weeds. There are general herbicide chemical products which can treat the soil to prevent plant growth, but these are indiscriminate and can have a damaging effect on the natural ecosystem in the soil and beyond as a result of leaching etc; therefore their use is discouraged.

Weed Control - The Worst Garden Weeds And How To Deal With Them
If a weed is defined as a plant growing where it is unwanted, then the worst kind of garden weed is that which both spreads rampantly and is also extremely difficult to eradicate. This article will focus on the "gang of four", which from my 20 plus years experience gardening in central Israel, are the most invasive and problematical of all.

Roundup Contains Acutely Toxic Chemical Elements Such as Glyphosate
Roundup Contains Acutely Toxic Chemical Elements Such as GlyphosateProblems with Roundup Weed Control Subject: The 10 reasons, roundup. From: "John A. Keslick, Jr. " treeman@pond.com Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2000 06:49:46 Compiled by Caroline Cox, Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides- (NCAP) Roundup, and related herbicides with glyphosate as an active ingredient, are advertised as products that can "eradicate weeds and unwanted grasses effectively with a high level of environmental safety. " However, an independent, accurate evaluation of their health and environmental hazards can draw conclusions very different from those presented in the ads. Consider these facts: 1. Glyphosate can be persistent. In tests conducted by Monsanto, manufacturer of glyphosate-containing herbicides, up to 140 days were required for half of the applied glyphosate to break down or disappear from agricultural soils. At harvest, residues of glyphosate were found in lettuce, carrots, and barley planted one year after glyphosate treatment. 2. Glyphosate can drift. Test conducted by the University of California, Davis, found that glyphosate drifted up to 400 meters (1300 feet) durng ground applications and 800 meters 12600 feet) during aerial applications. 3. Glyphosate is acutely toxic to humans.

home food growing - weed controlEVOLUTIONARILY APPROPRIATE INGREDIENTS > GROWING YOUR OWN INGREDIENTS > GROWING VEGETABLES > WEED CONTROL How to control the weeds in your garden WWW. NATURALHUB.COM FRUIT VEGETABLES NUTS CULINARY HERBS GROWING AIDS ORGANISATIONS BOOKS & MAGS THE NATURAL FOOD HUB Weeds get in the way of enjoying our gardens. They are simply life on earth trying to 'be', and I suppose they could be regarded as a testament to irrepressible 'life force' (known by some as DNA!) . But most of us would be a lot happier without them. We can never win the battle with weeds, but we can reduce their impact to very low levels. How we manage weeds depends on how dry the climate we live in is, how big our vegetable garden or orchard is, how much time we have, what tools are available to us, and what leeway we have to do what needs to be done when it most needs doing. Managing a vegetable garden is different from managing a yard full of fruit trees which is different from managing a lifestyle orchard. So we will consider these separately. This page is written to help home food gardeners, and practices are quite different to those relevant to commercial garden and orchards. It is also written with the assumption that most of us would prefer to use the chemicals known to be very safe, from a human health point of view.
